A second rail (5) is provided, including a feeder (5a), outlet end (5b), intermediate path (5c) for the staples (7) and a second closure (6) for the second rail. The outlet end (5b) of the second rail (5) discharges onto the path (1c) of the first rail. One rail (1, 5) provides the closure (4, 6) for the other rail (5, 1). The outlet end of the second rail is above the path of the first rail (1). A component shortens the spacing between the outlet end of the second rail (5) and the path (1c) of the first rail. The second rail or its outlet end can be moved in the direction of the first rail. The design is such that it can rest on the path of the first rail. At the outlet ends of the rails, their gradients are similar, once the movement has been completed. Each rail has a stop retaining the staples it carries. The stop is a rod (8) fitting a hole in the rail.
