PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flexible optical connector which is capable of performing complicated signal routing by using a common backplane for interconnection of optical parts and electro-optical parts on two or more circuit boards. SOLUTION: The flexible optical connector and an optical connector are suitable for use in an optical backplane for interconnection of optical circuit boards, and the flexible optical connector has a plurality of waveguides on two or more levels and provides a plurality of optical paths through which optical communication between optical circuit boards is made possible. The optical connector is manufactured separately from the backplane and then can be mounted on the backplane. The backplane can have a mounting structure of removably retaining and positioning the optical circuit boards and can, optionally, include electric traces for electric interconnections between circuit boards.
