PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader wherein it is detected whether a document placed on a platen glass is a sheet-like original or a thick book original, and an opening/closing operation of an automatic document feeder can be smoothly performed. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with an equalize mechanism KE having an equalize locking means LE in the hinge part A of a document feeding means 2, and a detecting means 103 for detecting whether the document placed on the platen glass 19 is a document having the thickness equal to or exceeding a prescribed one, and when it is detected by the detecting means 103 that the original has the thickness equal to or exceeding the prescribed one, the equalize locking means LE is released from locking.
