PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a plastic optical fiber of which diameter blurring is suppressed. SOLUTION: As to a preform 15, a clad is formed from PVDF and a core is formed in a GI type using PMMA. The preform 15 is installed on a heater 50 of a melting extension system 40. The preform 15 is heated and melted in a temperature range of 180°C to 300°C. Drawing is carried out from the tip part 15a of the melted preform 15 to obtain an optical fiber 17. Cooling wind is blown to the optical fiber 17 from a cooler 50 to cool it down to 50 to 70°C. The optical fiber 17 is cooled down to about room temperature through 15°C cooling water 56. Since the cooling of PVDF is performed in two steps, occurrence of diameter blurring is suppressed and the optical fiber 17 of a favorable transmission loss can be obtained.
