PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a candy or a drug having a hard coating layer of crystalline maltitol resistant to crack, generating little surface cracking of the hard coating layer during storage, having low hygroscopicity of the hard coating preparation, giving a hard coating layer having luster and exhibiting good operability in forming the hard coating layer, and provide a method for the production of the coated candy and drug. SOLUTION: The hard coating layer of the crystalline maltitol contains a prescribed amount of a hydrogenated sugar derived from a starch raw material and having a polymerization degree of 4-19 and a hydrogenated sugar having a polymerization degree of≥20.
