PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of detecting a ballast condition from a penetration depth of a tamping tool, and to provide a lifting support device for controlling the tamping tool, based on an analysis result of data stored according to the method. SOLUTION: Tamping work of ballast laid under sleepers by dropping the tamping tool onto the ballast, is carried out by repeatedly dropping and lifting the tamping tool several times. The present inventors have found out a relationship in which the penetration depth of the dropped tamping tool into the ballast (hereinafter referred to as "the tool depth") is in proportion to ballast resistance, and have quantified the relationship as a factor of evaluation of the tamping work. According to the method, the tool depth can be obtained by measuring upper and lower heights of the tamping tool by using a potentiometer attached to a multiple tie-tamper, for instance.
