PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which improves the resolution at reading of an original; reduces the read time; and is capable of photographing general objects such as persons, reading or photographing portably while mounting it on a desk, and usable as a communication tool. SOLUTION: The image reader for taking an optical image representing an original or an object by a solid state imaging device to obtain image signals has an image reader comprising an original reader for taking an optical image reflected from the original by a one-dimensional solid state imaging device with scanning a light radiated on the original to obtain image signals, and an object photographing unit for taking an optical image of the object by a two-dimensional solid state imaging device to obtain image signals. When an operating means selects a non-plane between a plane and non-plane of the original, the reader measures the height of each original to be scanned with light to focus the optical image, and takes it by the one-dimensional solid state imaging device.
