PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for changing the width of a cast slab by which in the changing operation of the width in the case that a continuous casting speed is low, the width size after changing operation of the width is held within the allowable size and the deterioration of the product quality cast after changing the width and the lowering of the yield are prevented. SOLUTION: In the method for changing the width of the cast slab by which the cast slab width is enlarged or reduced by shifting the short wall sides of the mold during continuous casting, it is judged whether the precision of the cast slab width is good or not at the completing time of the width changing operation, and in the case that the width precision is out of the allowable range, based on a pattern pre-stored in a main control unit, a speed instruction is given into the control unit for driving the short wall sides of the mold and the short wall sides of the mold are shifted to the enlarging or reducing direction to correctively control the width of the cast slab.
