The method involves using electronic units for assembly at successive assembly stations during an assembly process, providing the units with vehicle-specific programs and/or data during the assembly process that are taken from a portable computer that is pre-loaded with the programs and/or data and then brought to the vehicle where the programs and/or data are read out of it after installation in the vehicle.
