A steering mechanism 10 for an automotive vehicle comprises a rack 14 and pinion 12, and an eccentric bush 16 for the pinion 12. By selectively rotating the bush 16 relative to a pinion housing 18 and then tightening a nut 50 to secure the bush 16, the position of the pinion 12 relative to the rack 14 is adjusted to minimise backlash, noise and misalignment caused by tooth wear. The housing 18 is substantially cylindrical and may be integral with a rack casing 28. The pinion 12 may be mounted within the bush 16 via bearings, one of which is located in a collar portion 32 of the bush 16.
