A hydraulic tensioner (100) comprises a hollow plunger (120) slidable in a plunger-accommodating hole (111) in a housing (110), the plunger (120) and housing (110) forming a high pressure oil chamber (R). A check valve unit (140), which includes a check ball (142) and a check ball retainer (144), allows oil to flow into the high pressure oil chamber (R), but prevents reverse flow. A plunger-biasing spring (130), disposed inside the high-pressure chamber (R) includes a close-wound first portion (131) fitting over the retainer (144) of the check valve unit (140), and a second portion (132) having spaced windings, which extends and compresses axially with protruding and retracting movement of the plunger (120). The outer diameter (D1) of the close-wound first portion (131) is greater than the outer diameter (D2) of the second portion (132) having spaced windings. <IMAGE>
