A negative electrode assembly for a storage battery. The negative electrode assembly has a substantially rectangular expanded copper mesh grid (11) having a width and a height which is at least one and a half times the width, the mesh grid has an upper edge (15), a lower edge (12) and side edges (13, 14), the side edges comprising an integral unexpanded copper sheet portion, a moulded on lead lug (16, 19) on the upper edge extending the full width of the body and insulating edge capping (22, 24) on the ride edges and the lower edges.
