PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately determine the maximum load of sheets sequentially loaded on a stack tray. SOLUTION: This sheet load detecting method has a level detecting lever 70 abutting on the uppermost sheet on a loading tray 16 for loading and storing the sheets, a detecting sensor 71 for detecting the position of the level detecting lever 70, a counting means 72 for counting the number of sheets simultaneously carried out to the loading tray 16, and a determining means 73 for determining the load of the sheets based on a paper surface level detection signal from the detecting sensor 71 and the counted value of the counting means 72. The fact that the sheets are loaded at a predetermined height position on the loading tray 16 is detected by the level detecting lever 70 and the detecting sensor 71, the counting means 72 is started by the signal from the detecting sensor 71, and the subsequent number of carried-out sheets is counted. When the number of sheets counted by the counting means 72 reaches a preset predetermined number, the allowed maximum load is recognized by the determining means 73, and required measures are performed.
