PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus having a fixing device capable of naturally performing the preheating of transfer material such as cardboard, avoiding the occurrence of blister and realizing high speed fixing processing. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided with a step for simultaneously transferring and fixing a toner image on an intermediate transfer belt onto transfer material by holding, pressuring and heating the transfer material at a nip part formed by a backup roller arranged inside the intermediate transfer belt and a pressure roller disposed inside a heating belt. The apparatus has a means for pressing the transfer material on the heating belt while the transfer material is transported on a linear transporting path formed by the heating belt on the upstream side of the area of the nip part.
