PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method capable of manufacturing a high-uniformity electron emission element capable of suppressing variation of an element current If in manufacturing it, in an electron emission element having: a substrate comprising a member containing SiO2as a main constituent and containing Na2O and K2O, wherein a mol ratio of K2O to Na2O is 0.5-2.0, and a film stacked on the member and mainly containing SiO2; and a first conductor and a second conductor disposed on the substrate.

SOLUTION: In a forming process and/or an activation process, a pause time of a pulse voltage repeatedly applied between the first conductor and the second conductor is set equal to or longer than 10 msec.
