PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a heterocyclic compound having a carboxyl group on the ring from a methyl-substituted heterocyclic compound on the ring in high yield. SOLUTION: The method for production comprises a step of treating the methyl-substituted heterocyclic compound with a microbial cell of a microorganism belonging to the genus Exophiala or a cultur or a treated material thereof or an extract therefrom.
