摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing optical element formed in a larger grid cycle than in the conventional manner and having an extinction ratio practically sufficient in the band of 800(nm) wavelength. SOLUTION: The polarizing optical element applies polarizing action on the light of prescribed wavelengthλout of the light from a visible wavelength region to a near-infrared wavelength region, which are made up of wavelength from 400(nm) to 840(nm). In a metallic grid formed on a transparent substrate whose refractive index is n<SB>1</SB>, when the cross-sectional shape of each grid is set as an almost rectangle, and its thickness is defined as (h), its width in thickness 0.5h is defined as (b), a grid cycle is defined as (d), an angle formed by a base and a side surface is defined as (s), and a refractive index between the grids of the metallic grid is defined as n<SB>2</SB>and the refractive index of the upper part of the metallic grid is defined as n<SB>3</SB>, they satisfy the condition of the formula (1).
