PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure the durability of a laser irradiation target member while eliminating ignition instability in starting a laser ignition type engine in which plasma is generated by laser light irradiation to ignite mixed air in a combustion chamber. SOLUTION: This laser ignition type engine includes: a starting target member to which laser light is applied at the time of starting an engine and a starting laser light guide mounted on a cylinder head, and further includes: an ordinary operation target member to which laser is applied during ordinary operation and an ordinary operation laser optical guide mounted on the cylinder head, wherein the engine is provided with a prism device for changing a laser optical path between starting time and ordinary operation time for irradiating both target members.
