PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a base material for a grating for constituting the grating which has a good appearance and excellent wear resistance and is inexpensive and light-weighted, and to provide a manufacturing method of the base material for the grating. SOLUTION: The base material 1 for the grating comprises a synthetic resin long rod member 2 which is formed to have a substantially T-letter shape in cross section, a substantially I-letter shape in cross section or a vertically long rectangle in cross section, and a metal covering plate 3 provided on the upper end part of the long rod member 2 to cover the upper face and both side faces along its longitudinal direction. In the base material 1 for the grating, the metal covering plate 3 is fitted into a forming die 5 and a heat-melted synthetic resin is fed into the forming die 5, by which the upper face and both side faces along the longitudinal direction of the upper end part of the long rod member 2 are covered with the metal covering plate 3 in an integrating manner.
