A front engine compartment for a vehicle has two front parallel frame members (3) fitted with a front cross member (4) and braced at the rear by dampers (5). Additional braces (6) connect the dampers to the rear cross member (7) above the front bulkhead. The side frame is also braced onto the A-members. The engine and transmission unit is surrounded by strengthened body sections which direct the power unit under the floor pan without intruding into the passenger compartment. The other parts of the body provide the crush zones.
