Imidazole and benzimidazole caspase inhibitors and uses thereof

Disclosed are compounds of formula I, wherein: R1 is CO2H, CH2CO2H, or esters or amides thereof, R2 and R3 are independently H or an optionally substituted C1-6aliphatic group, and R4 and R5 are independently H, an optionally substituted C1-6aliphatic group, or R4 and R5 taken together with the ring to which they are attached form an optionally substituted bicyclic ring selected from formulae (a) to (d). The compounds are used in the manufacture of medicaments for the treatment of caspase-related diseases.
