The valve assembly (10), for a high pressure firefighting hose and the like, has a pilot-controlled piston valve (30) and an acceleration-sensitive safety mechanism with a plastics ball, integrated in the hose control (52) with a switch lever (56) to operate the piston valve. When open, water flows at the legs of the piston and the piston guide (20) to the outflow (18) and, when closed, the piston is forced against the valve seat (50) formed at an inflow (14) to block the water flow.
