SUPPORTED POLYMERISATION CATALYST

A method for the preparation of a supported polymerisation catalyst system said method comprises the combination of (i) a porous support pretreated with a source of a transition metal atom, (ii) a polymerisable monomer, (iii) a polymerisation catalyst, and (iv) a cocatalyst, and is characterised in that the polymerisable monomer is added to the porous support before addition of one or both of the polymerisation catalyst and the cocatalyst. The preferred polymerisable monomer is 1-hexene and the preferred source of transition metal atom is a transition metal salt for example ferrous acetate. By treatment of a support with a transition metal compound prior to the incorporation of the polymerisable monomer results in supported polymerisation catalyst systems having improved activity and which show a reduction in the level of static on the resultant polymers in particular for polymerisations carried out in the gas phase.
