PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a slider and a magnetic disk unit wherein variation of floating height by a change of atmospheric pressure can be reduced even when a small-sized magnetic disk unit or a small-sized slider is used. SOLUTION: In an air lubricating surface 1 opposed to a disk medium and constituted of a front step bearing surface 9, front rail surface 6 for generating positive pressure to the disk medium to float the slider, a negative pressure groove 11 for generating negative pressure to suppress floating of the slider, a rear step bearing surface 10, a rear rail surface 7 for generating positive pressure and a recording and reproducing element disposing surface 8 wherein a recording and reproducing element 13 is disposed from an air inflow end 2 toward an air outflow end 3, a separating surface 103 for separating the recording and reproducing element disposing surface 8 and the rear rail surface 7 from each other is provided and the distance from an air outflow end of the rear rail surface 7 to the recording and reproducing element 13 is 5 to 10% of the slider length from the air inflow end to the air outflow end.
