A simple, small-sized magnetostriction underwater transmitter/receiver in which the amount of vibration in transmission is increased and the detection sensitivity in reception is enhanced. The magnetostriction underwater transmitter/receiver (10) comprises a water-tight case (12), a mass section (14) contained in the water-tight case (12), a generally rod-shaped ultramagetostriction rod (16) fixed to the mass section (14) at its one end (16A) and composed of an ultramagetostriction member, a coil (18) so provided as to surround the ultramagetostriction rod (16) and composed of a magnetic field generating coil (26) for applying a magnetic field in the axial direction to the ultramagetostriction rod (16) and a magnetic field detecting coil (28) for detecting the magnetic field applied to the ultramagetostriction rod (16), and a transmission rod (20) provided to the free-end (16B) of the ultramagetostriction rod (16).
