<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic device provided with a firmware updating function that enables the administrator of the electronic device to decide whether firmware needs to be updated and to set an update period by taking the use state etc., of the device into consideration. <P>SOLUTION: An update notice receiving means 301 analyzes a received notice and checks whether the firmware is the one loaded in the present device, refers to an updating means stored in a setting parameter 30 when deciding that the firmware needs to be updated, and instructs an inquiry means 302 to send inquiry mail to the administrator of the device when automatic update is not set. When the automatic update is set in an updating method, an update time is set in a timer 306.
