A connector principally but not necessarily for underwater anchorage comprising a probe (100) insertable within a receptacle (101) adapted to be anchored at (102) at a fixed location, the probe (100) comprising an internal mandrel (3) having an external ball or roller cage (7) with balls or rollers (8) riding upon respective ramps (110) of the mandrel whereby the balls or rollers (8) may engage the internal wall surface of the receptacle (101) to lock the probe and receptacle together when a load is applied to the mandrel attempting to separate the two parts. Sleeves (10) and (12) are spring-loaded apart by springs (1), and a pin (2) is removable to enable the sleeves (10) and (12) to move apart such that a circumferential array of balls (14) ride up associated reverse ramps (9) to lock the sleeve (10) and ball cage (7) with respect to mandrel (3) thus preventing retraction of the balls or rollers (8), and maintaining the probe (1) and receptacle (101) in locked relationship.
