<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical display device and a projection type display device realizing the higher quality of a display picture and the miniaturization of the entire device by arranging a 1st optical modulation element to perform the optical modulation of white light and a 2nd optical modulation element to perform optical modulation for every color light separated in terms of wavelength in series and by performing optical modulation at two stages. <P>SOLUTION: The projection type display device 1 includes a light source 10, a liquid crystal light valve 30, an incident side lens 50, a cross dichroic prism for spectrum 70, liquid crystal light valves 60B, 60G and 60R, relay lenses 370B, 370G and 370R, emitting side lenses 375B, 375G and 375R, reflection mirrors 380B, 380G, 380R, 385B, 385G and 385R, a cross dichroic prism for composing light 80, and a projection lens 110.
