PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an epoxy-modified polyphenylene ether exhibiting good solubility in methyl ethyl ketone or acetone. SOLUTION: The method is one for producing (C) an epoxy-modified polyphenylene ether by mixing and reacting (A) a polyphenylene ether with (B) a cresol novolak epoxy compound, wherein the polyphenylene ether (A) contains 0.1 to 5.0 wt.% volatiles.
