An actuator (25) adjusts braking force acting on a parking brake (12). A control device (7) triggers the actuator on demand. A device (26) determines braking force acting on the parking brake. The control device is set up so that the actuator is triggered by relying on the braking force determined, in order to lock or release the parking brake. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a parking brake system for motor vehicles.
