To join transparent (5) and absorbent (6) plastic components, a traversing laser beam (1) is focussed by a cylindrical lens (2) to give a convergent-divergent beam (3). The proportions are chosen so that the waist (4) of the beam coincides with the contact surface (7). Only in this region is the energy sufficiently concentrated to produce melting and so produce a joint.
