A drive mechanism is provided for interconnection between a motor (10) having a substantially constant rotational output and a linear motion convey or (6). The linear motion conveyor (6) includes a tray (7) which may be movable in a first reciprocating direction at a slow speed, then in a backward reciprocating di rection at a second speed to move goods along the tray. The drive mechanism includes universal joint (14) for interconnection between the output shaft (12) of th e motor (10) and a second shaft (16), such that the rotational speed of the second s haft (16) varies as a function of the angle between the second shaft (16) and a third shaft (28), and a crank (34) interconnects the third shaft (28) with the tray to m ove goods along the tray. This drive mechanism may also be used to drive a tray configured in spiral and thereby convey product vertically.
