Container for food products that produce exsudate has holes in base for protruding portions of absorbant panel on underside

The container (100) is in the form of a tray with raised sides (300) and holes (220) in its base for protrusions (260) on a panel (250) of an absorbent material that is fitted into a recess (230) in the underside of the tray base. Each of the protrusions is smaller in area that the hole in which it fits, leaving room for accumulated exsudate (E) round it. The holes can be round, oval or polygonal in shape, and the absorbent panel has a layer of an impermeable film (254) covering its outer surface. The container is manufactured in an injection mould incorporating projections that protect the protrusions on the absorbent panel.
