PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air cleaner for a general purpose engine, having simple construction for detecting the clogging of an air filer. SOLUTION: The air cleaner 10 comprises a cleaner box 30 storing the air filter 33. The cleaner box 30 is partitioned into a dust chamber 34 and a clean chamber 35 with the air filter 33. A suction side pressure passage 41 communicated with the dust chamber 34 and a discharge side pressure passage 42 communicated with the clean chamber 35 are connected to a cylindrical gage body 43. The gage body 43 stores a movable top 44 in a movable manner. The gage body 43 is partitioned into a dust side pressure chamber 45 communicated with the dust chamber 34 and a clean side pressure chamber 46 communicated with the clean chamber 35 with the movable top 44. When the clogging of the air filter 33 increases the air flow resistance of the air filter 33, a big pressure difference is produced between the dust chamber 34 and the clean chamber 35 and so the movable top 44 is moved up over a preset distance.
