PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for carrying out surface treatment of a paper web in which the surface of paper web can be controlled to desired surface roughness without protruding fine fiber from the surface of the paper web in the surface treatment method of paper web in which grinding treatment of the surface of paper web continuously traveling is carried out by a grinding material. SOLUTION: In the surface-treating method of the paper web in which grinding treatment of the surface of the paper web continuously traveling is carried out by a grinding material, the grinding treatment is carried out at least twice on either one surface of the paper web and first grinding is carried out by rubbing the surface of the paper web with the the surface of the grinding material in one way direction which is parallel to flow direction of the paper web and second grinding subsequently carried out is carried out by rubbing the surface of the paper web with the surface of the grinding material in the direction which is reverse to the first grinding and when carrying out grinding treatment three or more times, grinding subsequently carried out is carried out by rubbing grinding material surface with the surface of the paper web in the direction which is reverse to grinding in previous stage.
