PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating material for magnetic recording medium in which emboss and scratch for a magnetic layer are improved sufficiently and which is excellent in a running property and its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: Emboss and scratch for a magnetic layer are improved sufficiently by reducing a coarse projection having fixed magnitude, also, it is found that it becomes a magnetic recording medium being excellent in a running property, further, a manufacturing method of the coating material for magnetic recording medium being effective for reduction of coarse projection can be obtained. In the coating material for magnetic recording medium, a back layer in which coarse projection is reduced, an emboss property and durability are excellent and a running friction property is excellent can be formed by mixing and dispersing a specific large particle diameter inorganic dispersing object and small particle diameter carbon dispersing object.
