A process to detect a disconnected battery in a motor vehicle in-board circuit comprising engine-driven generator (10), battery (18) and consumer (21) comprises an evaluating unit that analyses frequency or voltage (35) and from given frequency characteristics determines whether the battery is disconnected or defective or there is a cable break. An independent claim is also included for a device for the above process.
