PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image with suitable exposure. SOLUTION: The average of luminance in a predetermined and prescribed range in the entire picked-up image and the theoretical luminance in that range (the luminance of the image with proper exposure calculated by an automatic exposure adjusting part 12) are calculated by a level evaluator 19. An exposure correction coefficient is calculated on the basis of a difference between the theoretical luminance and the luminance of the actually picked-up image. The calculated exposure correction coefficient is multiplied to a white balance gain. Consequently, the gain is decided for adjusting the white balance of the picked-up image by a white balance gain adjuster 16. The image pickup device and method, and the program can be applied to the image pickup device for a digital still camera, a digital video camera, a portable telephone having an image pickup function, and a personal computer or the like.
