<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an IPS (in-plane switching) liquid crystal display in which not only the display quality but the viewing angle is significantly improved by a simple structure. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display comprises, a first polarizing film, an optical compensation film having a first retardation region in contact with the first polarizing film and a second retardation region in contact with the first retardation region, a first substrate, a liquid crystal layer, a second substrate, and a second polarizing film, all disposed in this order, and shows parallel alignment of the liquid crystal molecules in the nematic liquid crystal material with respect to the surfaces of the pair of substrates on black display. The first retardation region produces ≤20 nm retardation in the plane and 20 to 120 nm in the thickness direction. The second retardation region is made of a discotic liquid crystal compound which is substantially vertically aligned. The slow phase axis of the second retardation region is parallel to the transmission axis of the first polarizing film and to the slow phase axis of the liquid crystal molecules on black display. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
