<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of performing an on-demand fixing faster in temperature rising than heretofore by more effectively using the upper-limit current (power) of a commercial power supply, and to provide its control method. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has a chargeable/dischargeable capacitor (455). Loads (460) except the heating element of a fixing unit (23) can receive power supplied from the commercial power supply (301) and/or capacitor (455). In the image forming apparatus, the temperature of the fixing unit (23) is detected by a temperature detection element of the fixing unit (23) in the course of printing. According to the detected temperature, the supply of power to the loads (460) from the commercial power supply (301) and the capacitor (455) is controlled.
