A solar panel (2, fig 1) includes a flexible polymeric support 4 and a plurality of photovoltaic cells 6. The photovoltaic cells 6 are spaced apart such that the flexible polymeric support 4 provides a hinge 10 between the photovoltaic cells 6. The photovoltaic cells 6 are preferably of a monocrystalline or polycrystalline type and are encapsulated in a flexible polymeric support comprising poly-ethyleneterephthalate (PET). Therefore, a flexible solar panel 2 is formed which can be mounted on a curved surface 12 without cracking of the crystalline photovoltaic cells 6 which are rigid. The solar panel 2 also preferably comprises bypass diodes (14, fig. 3) connected in parallel across the serially-connected photovoltaic cells 6. |
