In a papermaking assembly a wet web passes through a dying station prior to a coating station. At the drying station the wet web is dried on both sides by hot air. The vast majority of the heat-drying action is effected in an air cushion drier (2). The heat-drying action is individually regulated on each side of the web by variation of temperature and air flow. The wet web passes through a sequence of air cushion driers supported or unsupported by an air-permeable belt. The assembly advances the web at a speed of 1200 m/min and has up to six drying cylinders.
