A heating system for a vehicle includes a heater ( 12 ) with a first electric heating device ( 24 ), which can be operated to ignite an air/fuel mixture present in a combustion chamber ( 16 ), and with a second electric heating device ( 22 ), which can be operated to support the evaporation of the fuel into the combustion chamber ( 16 ). An actuating device ( 26 ) is provided for the heater ( 12 ), which actuating device puts the heater ( 12 ) into operation after a start command has been generated. A first start command generating device ( 30, 36, 26 ), which can be actuated by a user to generate a start command is provided along with a second start command generating device ( 32, 38, 26 ), which generates a start command according to an operating program. The actuating device ( 26 ) is designed to operate the second electric heating device ( 22 ) at a lower heat output after a start command has been generated by means of the second start command generating device ( 32, 38, 26 ) than after the generation of a start command by means of the first start command generating device ( 30, 36, 26 ).
