An optical liquid crystal element comprises a pair of substrates with electrodes, of which at least one is transparent and an electro-optical functional layer which contains a liquid crystal and a polymer arranged sandwiched between the substrates. By changing the alignment state of the liquid crystal as a reaction to applying a voltage, a light pass state and a light beam scatter state is indicated, in which the polymer forms columns of resin, in which the resin's main axial alignment/directions concurs with the direction perpendicular to the plane of the substrate with the electrodes and resins which are inclined with reference to the vertical direction coexist. The content of the polymer in the electro-optical functional layer amounts to at least 10 wt.% and the alignment direction of the liquid crystals in the light-beam pass state mainly concurs with the direction perpendicular to the substrate plane.
