PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor light element for monitoring front light propagated in an optical waveguide using a photodetector. SOLUTION: In the semiconductor light element 1, the photodetector 3 includes a light absorption layer 9 and a semiconductor layer 11 provided on a substrate 7. The optical waveguide 5 has a first end face 5a, a second end face 5b, and an active layer 13. The active layer 13 is provided on the substrate 7. The optical waveguide 5 includes semiconductor layers 15, 17 in addition to the active layer 13. One portion of light from the active layer 13 is reflected by the first end face 5a and becomes light going toward the photodetector 3. And one portion of light from the active layer 13 is transmitted through the first end face 5a and becomes emission light. The active layer 13 and the semiconductor layers 15, 17 of the optical waveguide 5 are provided between the first end face 5a and the second end face 5b.
