PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the storage cost by effectively assigning an unused area for utilization of a temporary area which an application temporarily requires. SOLUTION: In a storage management system for managing a storage device having data stored therein, management information for managing the storage device, area assignment information for managing an area assignment condition of the storage device, and history information for managing a history of area reservation/release are held, and an assignment request for temporarily utilizing an area, which is accompanied with designation of an area size and a use period is accepted, and relevant information calculated from the held history information is referred to determine whether the requested area can be assigned or not. In the case that assignment of the area is possible as a result, the area of the designated size is assigned to a request source for the designated period. In this determination, transition of the used capacity of the storage is obtained from the history information, and it is determined whether the designated area can be assigned for the designated period or not by transition of the used capacity of the storage.
