A fixation device monitor (5) is adapted to monitor the electrical potentials of two or more conductive fixation elements (2) secured to or located within a bone on opposite sides of a fracture in the bone, the fixation elements (2) being insulated from one another in the device (1). The monitor (5) comprises respective input means (7) for electrical connection in use to the respective fixation elements, potential measuring means (9) for measuring the potentials of the respective elements, and comparison means (11) configured to compare the measured potentials with potential reference values, and output means (17) for providing a report of the comparison. Also disclosed is a fixation device stimulator (19) adapted to apply electrical stimulation to one or more electrodes in a manner which changes in time during the healing of the fracture. The conductive fixation elements (2) of the fixation device may act as the electrodes. Also disclosed is a fixation device in which each fixation element is electrically isolated from each other fixation element. |
