Method for evaluating the settings of a controller area network (CAN) device in respect to bit timing has the following steps: generation of a test signal (10) that is slightly modified from the ideal original message configuration of a CAN network, transmission of the test signal and; determination of whether the CAN device generates a fault message in response to the test signal. The invention also relates to a corresponding device for implementation of the inventive method.
