A transition metal compound useful as a component of a catalyst for olefin polymerization; and a highly active polymerization catalyst giving a high-molecular olefin polymer. The catalyst for olefin polymerization contains a transition metal compound represented by the formula (1) wherein M represents a metal element which belongs to Groups 3 to 10 of the Periodic Table or is a lanthanide; X represents a sigma-bonding ligand combining with M, provided that when two or more X's are present, they may be the same or different; Y represents a Lewis base, provided that when two or more Y's are present, they may be the same or different; at least one of A<1> and A<2> represents a crosslinking group having a boron or phosphorus atom as a crosslinking atom; q is an integer of 1 to 5 and represents [(the valance of M)-2]; r is an integer of 0 to 3; and Q<1> and Q<2> may be the same or different and each has a specific structure.
