PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely start up a discharge lamp by generating the highest voltage possible in a secondary coil of a starting coil without increasing output voltage of a DC/DC converter and without increasing boosting ratio of the starting coil. SOLUTION: The lighting system for discharge lamps comprises a DC/DC convertor 1 which boosts a direct-current power supply, an H bridge circuit 2 which converts a direct-current output from the DC/DC converter 1 into an alternating current and outputs it to the discharge lamp, a starting coil 3 which applies starting voltage to the discharge lamp when it is started, a switch element 4 connected in series to a primary coil 3a of the starting coil 3, a starting capacitor 5 which is connected in parallel with the series circuit between the switch element 4 and the primary coil 3a, and a double voltage rectification circuit 6 which applies a voltage higher than the output voltage from the DC/DC converter 1 to the starting capacitor 5 on the basis of switching operation of the H bridge circuit 2.
